Therapy dog training includes training the dogs to be comfortable with:

· Being touched and handled by strangers

· sudden loud or strange noises

· walking on assorted unfamiliar surfaces

· not being frightened by people with canes, wheelchairs, or unusual styles of walking or moving

· get along well with children and with the elderly; and so on.

Overview

Advanced training classes are held periodically for those who have the desire to partner with their dogs in various therapy dog settings.  To advance to this level, many hours of obedience training and social interactions in various settings should have been completed.  Contact Marie-Josée directly to see when this training will be offered next.

Therapy dogs are trained to provide affection and comfort to people in hospitals, retirement homes, nursing homes, schools, hospices, disaster areas, and to people with learning disabilities.

Training sessions at this level is for dogs that have progressed through intermediate levels of obedience training.  These sessions focus on helping your dog behave appropriately with distractions found in the above-mentioned settings.

Marie-Josée is an approved evaluator for Therapy Pets Unlimited, so this test is given at the end of these sessions, as is the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test.  The Therapy Dog International (TDI) and Pet Partners tests are reviewed during class, but these test are not completed.

Testing standards are high, so not all dogs pass the tests the first time through.

For more information about training your dog to be a therapy dog, contact Marie-Josée, or you can click here, Therapy Pets Unlimited, to read more.
